The Metacognition Toolkit: Practical Strategies for Every Classroom

Metacognition—monitoring and controlling one's thought processes—is a powerful tool that can transform learning, helping students make substantially improved progress. This course provides a practical toolkit of strategies applicable from Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) to Key Stage 3.

Central to the course are the engaging members of the "Think Aloud Crowd," who make metacognition accessible and impactful:

• Conn-X the Connector: Help students draw meaningful links between new information and prior knowledge, enhancing comprehension and retention.
• Pre-Say the Predictor: Equip students to make informed predictions, sparking curiosity and active engagement in their learning.
• Quest Q the Questioner: Teach students how to ask insightful questions that deepen understanding and foster critical thinking.
• Vivid-Ly the Visualiser: Support students in creating mental images to clarify complex ideas and strengthen memory.
• Clu-Z the Clue Seeker: Develop students’ ability to identify and interpret clues, enabling them to infer meaning and solve problems effectively.
• Re-Vue the Reflective One: Guide students to evaluate their learning processes and outcomes, promoting continual improvement and self-awareness.

• Implement six core metacognitive strategies using the "Think Aloud Crowd" framework.
• Utilise 'Think-Alouds' to support metacognition and develop oracy skills.
• Overcome barriers to metacognition with inclusive strategies.

This course provides research-based strategies for metacognitive reflection and self-regulation. 
It is grounded in the latest EEF research on how metacognition improves student progress across all subjects.
