What is a ‘learning objective’?

Almost all teachers use this term, or something similar, but do we all define learning objectives in the same way?

Here at Chris Quigley Education we believe that everyone in a school needs exactly the same definition so everyone promotes the same thing – learning.

Our definition of an effective learning objective is:

‘Goals that define a subject discipline.’  They involve essential knowledge, skills, understanding and behaviours.

We don’t think that objectives are achieved in lessons.  We think that lessons are provision that advance learning. Learning should be seen as an ongoing process rather than an event.

We think that progress should be seen as advancement towards goals rather than completion within a lesson.
