Teaching Treasures

How can we harness the potential of Artworks and museum objects in our everyday teaching? This is a guest post by Karen Hosack Janes.

Artworks and museum objects can really contribute to the deepening, expanding and enhancing of understanding and appreciation of the world.  The great news is that there are thousands of resources, all freely available, for us to use.

Exploring learning resources on museum websites is an obvious place to start. I think one of the best is Teaching History with 100 Objects on The British Museum website http://www.teachinghistory100.org/

There is also a new website called Art UK http://www.artuk.org/ that has 212,732 artworks by 38,370 artists on it, and it’s incredibly easy to use. You can search by theme, by date and by region, and many of the themes link to BBC archive material. This all makes finding a work of art which fits into a project trouble-free. And what’s more, all the works of art belong to the nation. Amazingly, the UK has the best collection of publicly-owned art in the world, and thanks to Art UK these treasures, which can excite deep thinking in the classroom, are at our fingertips.
