Personalising Learning

Why would we want to personalise learning in the first place? Its a very good question. The way I see it, there is only one reason: To raise achievement in either children’s academic or personal development. I have thought about a practical approach to personalising learning over the last 18 months or so and have come up with a simple view.

By using a 3 step approach, we can personalise learning to raise achievement:

  • Step 1: Monitor OUTCOMES for children and decide which we would like to improve
  • Step 2: Evaluate which area of learning we need to improve. Is it WHAT children are learning, the RATE of learning or HOW they learn that needs to be improved?
  • Step 3: Tweak our provision in one of three areas: The curriculum, the way we teach it, or the way we guide and support children through it.
