A World Class Curriculum

Many people believe we have a long way to go in creating a world class. I’m not so sure. I think we have a long way to go in creating a world class department for education, but most schools I visit are doing very well despite the constant criticisms they receive on the news!

The latest thing to say is that “we don’t know what the future holds for our children, society is changing so fast, and How can we prepare our young people for the world of tomorrow - a world we can’t even envisage?”

Hasn’t this always been the case? Who knows what is around the corner? A month ago I had never even heard of Fanny Mae and now, it appears, this American company is deciding how much my mortgage will cost me when it is up for renewal...soon!

So what sort of a curriculum do we need? Many are saying that we must prepare our children for the future - but there is something much more worthwhile that we can do with our curriculum: help our children to shape and create the future. Brunel - a great British engineer wasn’t prepared for the future - he made it! George Stephenson, Vivien Westwood, Sir Chrisopher Wren, Earl Grey, William Wilberforce, Grace Darling, and many many more all have one great thing in common: They helped shape the future. They had the imagination but also the skills to do something.

By using the existing national curriculum, abandoning knowledge based schemes of work, and focusing on SKILLS PROGRESSION in all subjects (not just maths and English) I don’t think we’re a million miles away from a world class curriculum.
