Assessment of non-core subjects

Many schools are developing a more innovative curriculum and are left wondering how best to assess children in the non-core subjects.

Although assessment is a complex area, it can also be over complicated thorough the over use of summative assessment. Instead, we could plan to a particular level on a day by day basis, and then formatively assess children at the end of each lesson.

Let’s say we are teaching a group of children a level 3 skill. Our key questions are then “Could they do it?” “Was it a challenge?” “Did they do it independently?” This gives us a good picture of children’s capabilities. For this to happen, we need to know about the level we are teaching our children. For help with this see Planning A Skills based curriculum on the products page.
